Hazel Says...

This is my strength coach's baby named Hazel Luna.  I never posted this picture, and it has been recently switched to be my desktop pic for the month, so I wanted to share it with you all.   It has reminded me the importance of smiling.  Whenever I open my computer now, I smile, because, who sees this adorable little girl sitting in a pumpkin with her chubby arms and cute outfit and doesn't, without even noticing or trying, smile?

I read this interesting article the other morning and was reminded of the benefits a simple smile can have on your mood, but also the effect it can have on others as well.  While spending these last 10 days at home before I head to Europe for the season on Wednesday, I have noticed what a difference making myself smile in the morning before I get out of bed makes on the way I go about my day.  So, its become something I do. Try it tomorrow.  Wake up, take a breath and smile for no reason at all, just smile, whether you want to or not.  Feel that instant change in your attitude, demeanor?  I do.  So, I think it's the ticket, and Hazel Luna here, is helping me do it.

So, as I soak up my last day in Vermont tomorrow for 4 months, I feel ready to hit the road and join my teammates.  I have had a chance to recover, get my feet back under me and my injury has had time to heal so I am feeling almost 100% again!  It's exciting stuff!  So, I'm smiling, but I am sure had I frowned more last week, I would not have healed up as quickly:)

If you feel like reading more, here is the article I found the other day:

Happy Thanksgiving!

Lillehammer Triple

We just arrived in Lillehammer, Norway for our second weekend of World Cup racing and our first mini tour of the season, which is usually held at the opening World Cups in Kuusamo, but this year it has been moved to Lillehammer, which is fun, as the venue is new last year and we will get an opportunity to really race all of the courses and loops.  Today was a skate sprint, tomorrow is a 5k skate individual start and Sunday will be a pursuit start 10k classic, based on the results from the sprint and the 5k.  It is a really fun format and I am hoping to be able to chase some people down in the coming days!

It was a really fun day here, as Celine Brun-Lie who joined our women's team camp in Alaska this summer and hosted me at her house two summers ago in Oslo was second!  It is not an easy ladder to climb up in the Norwegian team or just in the World Cup field in general, so to be on one of those podium steps is a really special experience, and Celine has been really patient with a very tough battle, so to see her succeed today was so inspiring for me.  I am so happy for her.  Congrats Celine.  Thanks for reminding us all the importance of belief in yourself, belief in your process and your way and not to ever give up.

Celine, showing some emotion after securing second place in today's sprint.

Noah, still smiling with a broken fibula.  He actually just had surgery in Vail yesterday morning, so already on the road to recovery.  He is expecting to be back for World Champs in Falun, Sweden in February!  Send speedy recovery wishes his way!

Jessie and Soph just being great people.

Our team PT for the last 3 weeks has been Pete Dickinson from the Methow Valley in Washington.  He has been incredible to have on the tour with us, never too tired to work on whatever we need, even our boots! Thanks for all of your time and knowledge you have shared with us, Pete! We can't wait to have you back again in the future!

Some "dry needling" on my shoulder, which is a sort of acupuncture technique to get some muscles to relax.

Skiing in the heart of winter in Sjusjoen earlier this week.  So nice to be on real, white, beautiful snow.

And with the Norwegian tundra all around, on the Birkebeiner trail, ahhh, couldn't be better.

The views were beautiful.

Like I said, beautiful.

Reese Hanneman took this picture of me after our ski one day.  If you haven't checked out his photography, you should.  His website is: http://www.reesehanneman.com.

Davos Week 1

This past week we have been in Davos, and actually it has been almost two weeks now, as, due to lack of snow, our races in France planned for this coming weekend were moved to Davos as well.  So, this weekend we will be racing here as well, tomorrow with a 10k skate and Sunday with another skate sprint.  Europe has been having a very tough snow year so far, and Davos is one of the few places in central Europe with any snow at all.  So, as as a result, we will not be spending the holiday break in Les Saisies, France,  but will stay in Davos for Christmas as well!  I am bummed not to be spending the time in France, as it is one of my favorite places to ski, but most of the team will be together this way, making it more festive at the holidays!

A photo from the 10k Classic last weekend.

Sadie, popping champagne to celebrate finishing her last college class! Impressive lady to be able to manage school and skiing while on the road.  Congrats Sades!

Holly was in Davos for a week preparing for the two marathon races she competed in this weekend in Livigno, Italy, so she stopped in for dinner one night and we got to catch up!  Plus, she then went and snagged a 2nd place in the 42k skate on Friday!  Congrats Holly!

Jessie found a bit of chocolate....just the small sized ones!

A few of us drove over the pass last week to get some different skiing terrain in Livigno, Italy and we followed this most of the way over the top.  A snowblower that was blowing the snow from the side of the road into the dump truck which was then taking it to the course.  Pretty incredible how much snow they had to move to make these races happen.  No job is too big here to put on a World Cup.

After our ski in Italy we stopped in for a pizza and at the end of our meal we were offered a taste of many different regional liquors, as well as this grappa.

Just a cobra and a scorpion marinating in there.  No big deal.

Nice shot of a perfect Davos day (minus all the snow that should be here!) from our deck at the Hotel Kulm.

Vitamin D. Erik and Sadie soacking it in.

Lullaby time.

Caitlin Gregg has been with us this last month as our continental cup leader from last season!  Its always so fun to have another face along with us.  She has been keeping close tabs on her husbands races and keeping us informed.  Here she is checking his results while pumping some heavy iron!

The Kaffee Klatsch is a common stop for us here in Davos, mostly because of their beautiful Cappuccinos!

Always good to get a little spa time when possible.  Tough life....

And on a completely different note; Meet Addison Wubbles!!!  Alex and Cory Wubbles, my very good friends (Cory is also one of our wax techs, though he is taking this year off) had a healthy baby boy on December 8th!  I am so excited to meet this guy! Lucky little man to get parents like these guys.

Mid Tour Quick Update

After a great Christmas break and prep period for the Tour de Ski, it is finally on.  We are currently in Val Mustair, Switzerland for a skate sprint for stage 3 of the 7 stage tour.  I am actually done for the day, as I did not make the top 30, but Sophie, Sadie, Kikkan, Jessie and Sim are all about to fire off some heats as I write this.  The day is perfect, a bit of wind, but mid 20s and sunny, so besides wishing there was a little white stuff outside of the 0.6k course, it couldn't be better.  We are now off to Toblach for a 5/10K Classic tomorrow followed by a 15/25k pursuit start skate on Thursday.  It is exciting, as always to be doing the Tour, so I'm pretty pumped these days.  Onto the next stage!

Sophie, Sereina Boner, and me posing with our Johaug gloves after training together over Christmas.

Kikkan had a birthday on the 31st, so we made her a unicorn card.  After all, she is our shining Unicorn.

Celebrating in true mustache style with our friend Markus from Davos, who takes great care of us when we are there.

We showed up to a beautiful winter scene in Oberstdorf, but it quickly changed after two days of hard rain.  But this day was a beauty.  The snow was so white!

Our Winter Wonderland for that one day in Oberstdorf. It was amazing,

Opening Ceremonies in Oberstdorf!

On our drive to Val Mustair the other day we drove past a reservoir that flooded a town in order to bring water to another town and there is a church steeple sticking out of the water that you can walk out to when the reservoir is frozen.  It is a beautiful site.

The Tour was an incredible rush and I have so much to tell, but I really want to get these pictures up before they become irrelevant and the words are slowly working themselves onto paper, but not ready for the blog yet.  Thank you for all the emails, messages, and positive vibes that everyone sent.  I was overwhelmed by the incredible support from all of my communities, again.  Thank you.

The US women's alpine team was 20 minutes up the road from Val di Fiemme, training and preparing for the Flachau night slalom that was last night and they took the time to come down and watch Saturday's race.  They were by far the best cheering squad on the whole course.  I think they yelled louder than Dario's fan club with the huge swiss bells!  Thanks girls, and Carl!

Paula and Resi holding me up after my best ever classic result in 5th on Saturday! Must have been the cheering!

Me and Aino-Kaiso Saarinen. Aikku gave me a necklace that is meant to be passed on to strong, inspiring, happy women around the world.  The idea is to keep the necklace for a week or two and then pass it on to another women who you find embodies these attributes.  I was very honored that she gave it to me and I think it brought me some luck this week!

Oleg, me, Peter, Matt, Gus. Most of the crew.

The last 2 stages of the Tour I was the only athlete racing, so I had my own personal wax crew and coaches, as well as masseuse!  I don't think there was a better staff to athlete ratio in any other team, not even Norway or Russia! From left to right: My wax tech, Oleg. Our new wax tech this year from France, JP.  Our steadfast Swedish tech, Peter.  My coach, Matt and another newish tech for us this year from the US, and Worchester, VT, Gus.  Jason Cork was taking a sick day this day, so was not in the photo, and our masseuse, Meg was also not in this photo.  Quite a staff.

The whole crew. Back Row: Gus, Matt. Middle Row: Peter, JP and Jason. Me and Oleg and Meg.

So....that looks like a big hill....

When you have to ski up an alpine mountain, you need the help of lightning bolt socks to get you to the top in a speedy fashion.  Glad I had mine with me, and they were even clean!

Driving in the cargo van with Matt and Gus on our way to get a birthday italian pizza! It was so good, even though mine was gluten free!  For sure it was the best gluten free pizza crust I have had.  It was chewy and everything.  YUM!

Gus got the calzone....

....and cleaned his plate no problem.

Me in my B-Day striped outfit and a delicious dessert!

Birthday panna cotta, my all-time favorite European dessert.

Ahhh! I got to alpine ski!!!!

In this scenery too.  Doesn't get much more gorgeous than Seiser Alm, even on a low snow year.

And the sunsets here will blow your mind.
As will the Hotel Panorama dinners!! Each one is more gorgeous and delicious than the last.

And then the snow finally fell! 20cm later and 2 days of massive wind and white out conditions and we woke up to this on interval day! How convenient, eh?!

I am fueled constantly by ProBar.  If you haven't tried them, they are delicious, all made out of real food, are gluten free and made in Park City!

On my long skate ski this morning.  It really could not have been any nicer.

Heading to cold, cold Russia Wednesday morning, so one last interval session here tomorrow and then hitting the road for Munich.  Stay tuned for a Russia update as well as some thoughts on the Tour that are taking a while to get down on paper.  Happy MLK day. Today's inspiration came from this article and the kindness of these people in today's world.
Get well soon, Nick!

Russia to Davos to Ostersund

My first World Cup Podium!  Me, Astrid Jacobsen and Steffi Böhler.  It was quite a day for me, special in a lot of ways, but to know that it is possible is quite a feeling that I hope to be able to share with others.  Dream, Dream, Dream people, because I can promise you that I am just a human that likes to work hard, to be in the outdoors and be doing it with friends.  Pursue what you love to do.  Do it with as much vigor and passion and effort as you can muster and you will be amazed with what you find you can achieve.

After our short, but taxing trip to Russia, we headed back to Davos for two weeks of training, as there were two weekends off from World Cup racing, which is not something that happens very often.  Sophie, me and Andy on a sunny ski in Davos. We didn't get too many sunny days, but we did have really good snow to train on, cold temps and fresh snow almost every day.

Andy and me at the top of Dischma, one of the valleys you can ski here.

Sophie, Matt and I skied Sertig, one of my absolute favorite places to ski in the world.  It is a bit of a trek to get to it, as it is the furthest valley away from our hotel, but luckily I had a few longer sessions which let me ski it twice in the two weeks I was there.  It is a classic only valley and it is 10k from the bottom to the top, basically perfect striding terrain the whole time.  It is really a unique ski.

Krys, one of our awesome volunteer doctors and his wife, Kate, joined us for the camp.  It's always great to have a doc on the road, and it's always great to have new faces join us.  It always brings new energy and new stories that are very welcomed at this point in the year.

Yesterday we arrived in Ostersund, Sweden where our final World Cups before the World Champs will be this weekend.  I have only ever been here in the summer and it is awesome to be back.  It's a great city, with great ski tracks and I am just so happy to be back in Sweden again.  It is like I took a happy pill when I step back into this country.  Olivia Bouffard Nesbitt, a Canadian U-23 skier who is fresh of U-23 Worlds in Kazakstan joined Soph and I for this pink picture!

Like I said, we are happy and ready to rock at Worlds next week.
Also, in case you have not heard or seen, the US Ski Team website will be airing all of the races for World's!!!

I know you are all saying a hearty, ‘Welcome back to the blogosphere land, Liz” to me, as it has been some time since I last updated this page I used to type on every Monday.  There has been a lot going on, it turns out, and sometimes while I am in the moment, I find it hard to reflect and write about it all.  But now, I have had sufficient enough time to digest it all, so I am out of excuses and owe you all an update.  You have, after all, waited very patiently.

10k podium from Worlds: Jessie, Charlotte and Caitlin!  It was an incredible day with two US girls on the podium and 4 in the top 15, what a day!  Making history!

Soph and me after the relay.

Our 4x5k relay team: Jessie, Me, Sadie and Rosie

Celebratory champagne toasts after the 10k!

Andy, Kikkan and Peter, our beloved wax tech who has been with us for 9 years and will be moving on from the ski world for a new job that will keep him closer to home and breathing far fewer wax fumes.  But, Peter, you will be incredibly missed.

Rosie and Eli Brown, one of our volunteer wax techs for the week of World Champs.

We have had an awesome crew of people with us for Worlds.  Here is one of them, Dakota Blackhorse-Von-Jess who brings an incredible amount of energy and love wherever he goes.  It's been a joy to have him on the road with us for the last month.  And of course Sadie and Ida too!

Matt Gelso is another who always has a nice word to share and a laugh to be heard.

Kyle Bratrud joined us for the week also and was so into it all. His calm presence, but psyched personality was fun to have with us.

Sim and Soph

Me, Oleg, Soph and Toque (one of our long time volunteer techs). Oleg is Soph and my tech and he is one of the more uniquely special dudes you will ever meet with a heart the size of a mountain.

Team photo from Ostersund, going back in time a bit.

Me and my Pops.

Audi had some cars that they were giving rides to athletes on the ice track, so a bunch of us jumped in for a ride around the track.  Pretty fun.

Smiley Andy.

A dinner out of the hotel in the farmhouse Andy, Soph and my parents rented together at World Champs.

After the championships my parents and I went to Stockholm for two nights and got to check out the city on foot.  We walked a lot and my favorite part of the city was for sure the Vasa museum.  It was an old viking ship built in 1628 that sailed 1500 meters out of the Stockholm harbor and sunk.  It sat under water for 300 years until it was discovered and salvaged and now is housed in a museum in the city.

It was incredible to see such an incredible work of art that is so well intact after being underwater for so long.  It was really incredible to see and read about the story of her voyage.

My parents on the palace steps.

The last week has been spent in Lahti and a small town called Runni, Finland, where Jessie and I did a show race, which was really fun, before traveling to Oslo two days ago.  It was nice to race a non World Cup for the first time this season and it felt like a mini vacation for the two nights we were gone.

The track went around the hotel and was 1.2k long.  Double poling was the name of the game, so we competed in a 4.6k double pole race that night.  It was super fun.

Me, Jessie and Maurice Magnificat with long time skiing legend Juha Mieto.  He is a giant, and super friendly.  Really cool to meet him.

Now we are in Oslo getting ready for our last World Cup race of the season, the 30k Holmenkollen.  It turns out some of the biggest crowds all year and the weather this year looks to be spectacular spring conditions.  It's sunny and warm, and the Vitamin D is just feeling so good.  Happy times here in Norway, for sure.

Lina and John Farra met up with us for a visit.  John used to be our nordic director and Lina is his 13 year old daughter who is attending the Winter School this year in Park City, which means she will go to school in the summer and have the winters off to adventure and ski!  She is a really impressive skier, and a super self motivated and wonderful individual.  It was a joy to have them both around the last few days.

Our skiing group yesterday.  Rosie, me, Lina and Jessie.

Peter and Gus both have decided to move on to other parts of life after this season and they will be sorely missed.  Gus is off to attend BU for his MBA and Peter has a new job as a Project Manager for ABB, a multinational corporation.  Really cool opportunity, but we will miss him dearly.

Peter and I

Oslo's roller ski generation wall is always incredible to me.  I think our skis are hard to maneuver now?  Whew.  Good thing I didn't ski back then!

Me, our volunteer doc for the week, Heather Chichanowski and Sadie.

Yesterday was quite warm and so what did we do?  Yeah, we took a swim and soaked in the rays on the beach outside our hotel.

I feel like a new person.  The sun is an incredible happy drug and the cold water is such a shock.

A Season Recap Told Through Pictures

Being a cross country skier on the US Ski Team who gets to travel the world from November until mid March chasing World Cups, is a wonderful life.  It's full of opportunity,  challenges, good friends, incredible teammates and engulfed in a love of sport.  Here are a few pictures from the season and a few stories from the road.

Racing a World Cup in Davos, Switzerland this season.

A team picture from the road.  This was taken at the start of the Tour de Ski in Germany.

I was the sole finisher on our team in the Tour de Ski this season (a stage race not unlike the Tour de France, with 7 races in 9 days at 4 different venues in 3 different countries), due to some athletes needing to drop out due to sickness, injury and preparation for the rest of the season. So, the whole staff was working just for me for the last 2 stages!

Me and my team of waxers at the Tour de Ski.  To put it in better perspective, my usual wax tech is sitting to my left.  All of these guys work together, but each athlete has one wax tech who is in charge of getting our skis ready.  We share two athletes to one tech.  Once I was the only athlete left racing in the Tour de Ski I had all of these guys working to get the best skis possible, not for the whole team, but for me!  It was insanely awesome.

This was one of the highlights of my year.  Our women's alpine team was staying 30 minutes away preparing for their next race, and they heard I was racing and took the time to come down and watch me.  It was so moving to realize that everyone who is on the US Ski Team is really just one big team.  We all follow one another throughout the season and even come to races on the very rare occasion it works.  I skied to one of my best results of the whole season that day and I am sure having these girls yelling their faces off at me helped hugely.

Another racing shot.

This was in Russia on the day of the first World Cup podium of my career. I was second to my very good Norwegian friend, Astrid Jacobsen (middle) and just ahead of another friend, Steffi Boehler from Germany (far right).  I have been told that your first podium changes who you are as an athlete, as it lets you believe in what you can achieve in the future in a clearer light.

Team picture.

And I don't even like pink!

We ski in some cold, but beautiful places.  This is a bit east of Lillehammer, Norway.

And some of the sunsets we see blow my mind.  This one is in Davos, Switzerland.

Me and our Development Team coach, Bryan Fish.

Lot's of road tripping from venue to venue when you are on the road for 4 months.  Three abreast in the Cargo Van.

My birthday is in January right after the Tour de Ski finishes and I celebrated my 4th birthday in Seiser Alm, Italy.  Believe me, it is not a bad place to celebrate the day you were born.

Here is one of the views.  Just saying, we are pretty lucky to be able to see the places we see.

A few pictures from the World Championships in Falun, Sweden.

My teammate Sophie Caldwell and me.

"Little Morderbacken".  The Morderbacken is the name of the biggest hill on the courses in Falun.  There is a "lilla" or "little" Morderbacken...

....and there is a big Morderbacken!

Our women's Worlds Team.

Me racing in the relay at Worlds.  The socks that you can see me sporting we only bust out on relay days and the whole team has them.  We wore them when we placed in the top 6 for the first time ever, and we have worn them ever since.  They have helped us ski to multiple podium finishes, a 4th at the last 2 World Championships and have made a debut at their first Olympics in Sochi.  We are not superstitious, but these socks create a state of mind.  If you are wearing these socks, you are racing for more than just yourself that day.  You are racing for your team.  It's a different kind of pressure you put on yourself and a feeling of greater responsibility.  It's a feeling of honor, as you were one of those chosen to represent Team USA on that day and that's something that is not to be taken lightly.

Our relay team at the Falun, World Championships this year.  From left to right: Jessie Diggins, me, Sadie Bjornsen and Rosie Brennen (from Park City!)

Our two awesome PT's who volunteer all their time for us when they travel and leave their real jobs to come work on us.  We are incredibly lucky to have such generous supporters of us.  We really could not be performing at a high enough level to compete with the best in the World without them.

One of our awesome Swedish wax techs.

After Jessie and Caitlin won their medals the hotel left this in their room!

Me, Sadie, Jessie and Kikkan.

Yum!!! My fuel for the year is largely made up of these goodies!

SPRING FUN BEGINS WITH GOOD FRIENDS!

After a long season we are all ready for a break.  Some people jet to the beach to get warm and relax, others head for the mountains to backcountry ski or alpine ski, and others just go home to see friends and family.  I started with heading immediately into the backcountry of the Sawtooth Mountains around Sun Valley, Idaho where our final races of the season were held.  I grew up as an alpine skier so I have fallen in love with alpine touring, as you are able to get way out into the mountains where nobody is and satisfy my endurance junky desires and also make some turns on familiar feeling gear from when I was a kid.  After spending a week playing around up there, I came back to Utah to see my friends who I hadn't seen since early November when I left for the season, and I have been soaking it in.  Today was the start of the new training year, as we always officially start on the week that May 1st falls in.  So, this year that week started today, April 27th.  We have about 6 1/2 months to prepare for the 2015/16 season and I am pumped!  I busted out my rollerskis for their first training session of the year this afternoon and though it was a bit breezy, the sun was out, so couldn't have started on a better note, though I am feeling quite out of ski shape!

Spent a little time in Vermont 3 weeks ago and got to do some running with the Girls on the Run group from my Elementary School.  It was great to be home again, and as it was my 4th year joining there were some familiar faces!  It is so cool to see how the group has doubled in size in 4 years.  So inspiring to be among such an energetic group of young girls.  Though we were not quite able to finish our 40 minutes of running, as a thunder storm rolled in, we got a really good workout in and all came in with ear to ear smiles in time to play a trust game!  Thanks girls, for letting me join your inspiring group for a day!  See you next year and good luck at your 5k on June 6th!

Well, HAPPIEST OF MONDAYS to you all.  Welcome to my newly enacted Monday blog!  I have bet myself that I can't do it again, so, here's to proving me and all of you doubters out there wrong!  I am home in Vermont for another 4 days before I take off for Gallivare, Sweden and the season beyond.  Here are a few photos from my time in Vermont!

It has been great to be home and take some much needed rest with some much needed family time.  I take off on Friday for Gallivare, Sweden to get on snow!  T minus 2.5 weeks until the season starts!

Gallivare, Sweden!

We made it, after a LONG but easy travel day to Gallivare, Sweden, which is located about 100 kilometers north of the arctic circle.  Though it takes a while to get all the way up here, it is worth it, as the skiing has been great, with 5k of skiing on real snow (like the kind that fell from the sky!) I am hoping that we get some more to make the tracks even more white, but I cannot complain, as not only is this more winter than I have seen in close to two years, but the volunteers are also shoveling and making already good tracks, great.  Plus, it is snowing now, and I have heard rumors of 6 inches over the next couple of days which would be incredible.  Regardless, it is wonderful to be on real snow, not just a manmade strip, and with it hanging from the trees it is really beautiful here.

I have not taken any pictures, as my phone does not take great ones anymore, and the battery tends to die right after I take one, or if I let the cold air grace its presence, so I have stolen a few from Ida and Sophie, but would recommend checking out Noah's blog here: http://noahhoffman.com/skiing-in-gallivare/ for some really good shots.  Happy Monday, as always, and next Monday's blog will be come after our first races of the season!  They are not World Cups, but good FIS races which will help us get in the groove again before jumping right into the Kuusamo, Finland mini tour the following weekend.

I hope wherever you are, you are happy and healthy.

Sophie, Sadie and me after our first ski in Gallivare yesterday.

View from our hotel here in Gallivare.  It is a really beautiful scene here, with the trees covered in snow and the trails in perfect condition.  Plus, with such short daylight hours you are pretty sure to catch either the pinks of a sunrise or the reds of a sunset!

Happy Monday!  Our Monday today consists mostly of a long drive from Gallivare, Sweden to Ruka, Finland, where the start of the World Cup season begins!  We had our opening FIS races this weekend in Gallivare and had some really good success, with Jessie sweeping both races (a classic sprint and a skate distance, so about as opposite as you can get which bodes well for all the Tour racing this year!) and Sophie and Caitlin on the podium as well in the sprint and distance respectively.

As for me, I dove into some classic sprinting, and due to the small fields on the day, every woman qualified, so I was able to get some practice racing both the quarters and the semis, which was pretty fun.  The following day was the 10k skate, which is one of my favorite races, so it was good to get one of those under my belt before the first one on the World Cup.  I have some things to take away from it, things I want to improve, but the goal of remembering what it feels like to put a race bib on in the winter was one of the accomplishments of the day.  This ski racing thing on snow is actually pretty different from the summer training modes of running and rollerskiing, so the transition is always a bit of a learning curve it seems.

Kuusamo hosts the Ruka Triple as the World Cup season opener each year.  We start on Friday with a classic sprint, Saturday's race is a 5k skate and Sunday is a 10k pursuit start classic, which is based off the other two days results.  Pursuit starts are some of my favorites because you get entered in a huge game of tag on skis.

WINTER!!!

Jessie putting in some striding work.

So much snow.  It is really nice to be engulfed in winter here.

Our new incredibly warm puffy coats from L.L. Bean.  Wow.  I have never owned a nicer coat. Thank you L.L. Bean!

Me on a night ski with Sophie.

Thanks for all who took these pictures and shared them with me, as I have not taken a single picture so far.  Oops.  Remedies for that are on the way.

Happy Thanksgiving! I am really thankful for a lot of things, but this team is really high up on my list.

Extension Needed!

I know it is Monday and I know that means it is blog day, however, I am asking for an extension this week until tomorrow. I have some thoughts that I would like to put down on paper and have just not had time yet today to do so.  I will say that we had a long, but again, easy day of travel from Kuusamo to Lillehammer.  I had plenty of time to write, but unfortunately, car rides are a recipe for car sickness if I try and read or write, so those hours were out, and the plane rides were bumpier than usual today too.  So, not to make excuses, but I am going to need a day extension, but I promise it will be worth the wait, as I will have time to get some pictures together too.  Until then....be well.

Oh, and wish happy Birthday to Andy Newell today too, if you happen to have a sec.

Cheers!

Ruka recap and a ski at Nordsetter

The Ruka Triple has been the kickoff to the World Cup Season for many years, up until last year when we had the mini tour in Lillehammer instead.  Now it alternates, so next year it will be back to Lillehammer, but Ruka with still always be the World Cup Opener.  It is a tough way to start the season, as it's all or nothing.  You cannot pick and chose your races in a Tour, you must do them all, so we jump in with two feet and get the race season started with a bang.  I have never managed to have a strong start to my year in Ruka.  Maybe I have some nerves that I need to get out of my system, or perhaps it has more to do with the fact that

Sadie in her new World Cup name bib! The top 30 on the overall world ranking list from last year get their name on their training bibs. This is Sadie's first time getting one so it was picture worthy for sure!

Me and Jessie loving our ski in the real snow!

So beautiful up there.

Endless tracks, all in the sun, and though it was cold, it was perfect.

When Christmas isn't white....

I know I am among others when I say that Christmas is not the white, fluffy, sledding/skiing frenzy it used to be.  Here in Davos the snow is a strip of manmade white drawn out like a chalk line through the fields, around a golf course and up a valley.  However, I can't complain as the skiing has been quite good considering, and the sun time has been epic.

Our Christmas star.

I never updated after our Lillehammer 4x5k relay podium, so I wanted to just chuck this one in. It was a pretty happy and amazing day.

The whole women's team, minus Caitlin and Kikkan, as Caitlin was way out on course cheering and Kikkan was not in Lillehammer as she is busy growing a child in her belly.

The Davos crew!

I don't know if this happens to any of you, but I tend to get excited and forget how to just enjoy the moment right here, right now.  So, I figure, these are wise words for me to live by.

Debby dropped off some Christmas cookies for us when we arrived in Toblach.  Cross Country skiers are just so dang nice all over the globe.

Yeah, so like I said, not winter Christmas feeling here in Davos, but definitely not complaining about this Vitamin D time!
